Another high scoring cup game for the 2s that ended in us being on the wrong side of scoreline. 3-5-2 formation for the 2s from the start this week and an early lead through a speculative effort from Ross…the keeper helped him just a tad. Who cares though as In the history books, it will just state- Ross scored.
The opposition we faced were by far the best outfit the reserves have faced. Ashurst wood 3rd team…apparently?? They were stunned though as they found themselves 2 down, this time a goal with no luck involved. Dan Powell’s good hold up play who then put Macca in the clear to expertly lob the keeper! Dan Tyler playing in a new position gave away a professional foul in the box, after a long ball from the keeper caught us out at the back after our corner. Tom Kellaway saved it!!!
However it was soon 2-1 another ‘you’ve been framed’ contender goal with Scott Taylor’s goal line clearance cannoning off Tom’s (the stand in keeper) backside and in. We soon found ourselves 3-1 up with little left in the half through another ‘freak’ goal. Shaun’s set piece from a mile out bounced in the corridor of uncertainty and found itself in the top corner, miraculously no one laid a touch on it. Cries of ‘keep it tight before half time’ were ignored, as their marauding left back carried the ball all the away into the box. The ball fell to their striker to lash it home…3-2 Hurst into half time.
We started the second half brightly and created a few chances. However a good Ashurst Wood 3s side…were awarded another penalty. Dan Tyler with another professional foul, this time the ref cautioned him with a quote of ‘I’m not that harsh so it’s just a yellow’. This time it was converted but Tom K went the right way with a great effort. The game then massively opened up with chances at both ends, both teams tiring.
Extra time for the second week in a row beckoned. It was a disastrous start, again from an attacking corner- the ball was hoofed up pitch for the their striker to bare down on goal and score. After this there was little to note with the game getting a bit niggly. Hurst poured forward to no avail. Full time and the 2s crashed out of another cup at the first hurdle.
As the title suggested soft goals cost us dearly but the football played was encouraging in parts.
MOM: Stand in keeper Tom Kellaway
