Hurst were looking to improve on their shakey performance in Falmer in the more familiar surroundings at Fairfield against a Charlwood side up amongst it in the top half of the table with the Blue Dogs.
Most of the possession was with the home side, but it only took one in swinging free kick to break the deadlock after twenty minutes.
Charlwood doubled their lead five minutes later after a good cross from the right hand side cut the defence for a tap in.
Tom Ward continued his outstanding form by tucking away an effort convincingly before half time, into the bottom left.
Charlwood were quick to reply and go into the half 3-1 up when the Hurst defence was opened up through the middle for their striker to tuck home a one on one.
In the second half Martin rounded the keeper and slotted home with half an hour to go, however Charlwood quickly regained their two goal lead after a poorly defended corner led to a second cross in that eventually crept in.
Hurst made changes and went to three at the back for the last fifteen but Charlwood, who came with only eleven, stood strong and compact to see out the win.
MOM shared between Tom Ward and Scott Taylor
