Hurst started the day top of the league after a good performance the week before against Charlwood where we ran out 3-2 winners.
The same 11 who started that game kept their place for the visit from Old V’s – despite the return of regulars Luke Martin, Luca D’Alessio and Luke Macdonald.
The Blue Dogs made things difficult for themselves at boggy Fairfield though. 25 minutes in Old V’s had already nodded in two goals thanks to their obvious man for man height advantage.
Hurst kept a lot of the possession in the first half but only tested the keeper a couple of times drawing some very good saves from the Varndeanians keeper – shots from Ward and Lambert.
Playing uphill seemed to benefit the boys in blue but with no success in the final third despite even more possession than the first half.
Godfrey had a shot expertly saved from a Bartram cross with five minutes to go as an onslaught of balls into the box began.
On the 90th minute mark Tom Ward was deemed to have been tripped inside the box and Bartram stepped up to slot in his first of the season.
The three changes had been made and with the extra bit of energy and fitness coming into play Luke Martin found himself in on goal and went on to loft the ball over the impressive V’s goalkeeper in the 94th minute of the game.
2 points dropped or 1 point gained?
